Trilby is a character with multiple tiers to his personality. On the surface he is a very smart man with a quick wit and a sense of humor regarding many situations. Going deeper down though Trilby has many feelings, beliefs and drives that may not show up at first sight.

Starting with his feelings that have been with him from the beginning of the canon, some of his history needs to be briefly mentioned here because of how much it reveals about the character of Trilby. Not much is known regarding his past before a particular event. Due to misfortune that befell him in University Trilby dropped out of society all together and turned himself into a master thief. Not much is elaborated upon in the canon but it can be inferred from a comment he made that the death of his father may have been one driving factor in this.

Trilby’s intellect and determination are very clearly shown here. Not only did he seek out master thieves of his day to be trained but he also made a “name” for himself. I say “name” because Trilby dropped his real name when he became a thief and the name Trilby only came about due to the media. Not only this but he has experience as a mechanical engineer (likely what he went to school for) He used this to make a grappling hook/taser disguised as an umbrella called a Grolly and to rig up his hideout with a defense system to keep his skills sharp.

Going further Trilby has a couple views regard society. He described his actions of being a thief as “separating the over privileged from their vulgar jeweled trappings” this shows a fundamental dislike for the wealthy but he also has stated he doesn’t take anything people need or would truly miss. He believes in being a gentleman after all. He also has a dislike for the media of the modern age; mainly what is touched upon is his views regarding television. He has a problem with television due to the fact he feels television shows are made to make ratings not to be quality content. In a similar strain he makes the comment about how the media wouldn’t be looking at the Defoe manor and the disappearances surrounding it as much if a celebrity hadn’t disappeared.

Despite this sometimes shrewd analysis of society he still has morals and compassion. As stated above he doesn’t take things that will be missed but he also doesn’t believe murder or excessive amounts of violence are something that is needed or justified. Trilby also has compassion for people. Especially various individuals he has connected with (such as the group at the Defoe Manor incident)

Even before Defoe manor Trilby had a fear. This fear was his identity being discovered. For some reason he was driven to keep this information secret. This was likely a way to distance himself from his past self and move on to being who he wanted.

Although after the Defoe Manor Incident Trilby had far more anxieties that affected him than just being found out. He gained a fear of the supernatural things that could be chasing him, to the point of nightmares and any reminders of the incident being a practice in anxiety. This would leave him with multiple fears as even the sight of houses similar to the Defoe Manor makes him anxious.

Underlying Trilby's entire being is his strength of will. In at least two occasions it has played into his life and even kept him alive when he would of otherwise died immediately.
